Here's a podcast I created, to tell my students about how they can use pronoun choice to make their papers sound better. While I could also present this information in text form, some students learn better from hearing rather than reading words. Also, the fact that this is my voice gives this a personal touch, and helps me be more "present" in the class.
To give a little context, the students in my composition class have been routinely using "you" or "one" as their default pronouns, as in:
When you take an online class, you should take care to follow the syllabus.
When one does not earn enough money to support one’s family, it becomes necessary to seek the aid of public assistance programs.
It's generally better to use the third person plural, as in:
When students take an online class, they should take care to follow the syllabus.
When employees do not earn enough money to support their families, it becomes necessary for them to seek the aid of public assistance programs.
